marimbas

Wooden percussion instruments

Marimbas is the plural of marimba, a percussion instrument consisting of wooden bars arranged like piano keys, struck with mallets.

Resonator tubes beneath the bars amplify the sound, producing a warm, mellow tone.

The marimba originated in Africa and developed further in Central America, where it became Guatemala's national instrument: The marimbas played throughout the festival.
