mare's-tails

High feathery clouds

Mare's-tails are wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds that streak across the sky like flowing horse hair.

The term also names a common aquatic plant with whorls of fine, hair-like leaves around a central stem.

Both uses derive from resemblance to a horse's tail: Mare's-tails in the morning sky often signal changing weather.
