mandola

Mandolin's deeper sibling

A mandola is a stringed instrument in the mandolin family, larger than a mandolin and tuned a fifth lower.

It has a deeper, mellower tone suited to accompaniment and ensemble playing.

The mandola occupies roughly the same range as a viola does among violins: She switched from mandolin to mandola for the slower passages.
