malvertising

Weaponized online promotions

Malvertising is the use of online advertising to spread malware.

Attackers buy legitimate ad space or compromise ad networks to deliver malicious code through banner ads, pop-ups, or redirects—often on reputable websites whose operators are unaware.

Users may be infected simply by viewing the ad, without clicking anything: The news site unknowingly served malvertising that installed ransomware on visitors' computers.
