grimdark

Morally gray fiction

Grimdark describes fiction characterized by moral ambiguity, graphic violence, and bleak settings where hope is scarce and heroes are flawed or absent.

The term originated in the tagline for the Warhammer 40,000 game universe: "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war." It now labels a subgenre of fantasy and science fiction that rejects traditional good-versus-evil narratives: Game of Thrones helped popularize grimdark fantasy.

The word can be used dismissively to criticize gratuitous darkness or edginess.
