lost works
Destroyed artistic heritage
Lost works are creative or scholarly productions—books, plays, music, art—known to have existed but no longer surviving.
Ancient literature teems with lost works: plays by Sophocles, books by Aristotle, referenced and quoted by contemporaries but vanished through fire, neglect, or time.
Some lost works resurface centuries later; most remain permanently gone, known only through fragments or descriptions.
