long house

Extended tribal residence

A long house is a traditional dwelling built long and narrow, housing multiple families or an extended family under one roof.

The term applies to structures from various cultures: the bark-covered lodges of the Iroquois, the thatched halls of medieval Scandinavia, and similar communal buildings in Southeast Asia.

The village centered around a single long house where three generations lived together.
