linear thinking
Straight-line logic
Linear thinking is reasoning that proceeds step by step in a straight line from premise to conclusion.
It follows a sequential, logical path: A leads to B leads to C.
The term often appears in contrast to lateral or creative thinking, which jumps between ideas or approaches problems from unexpected angles.
Linear thinking works well for math problems but not for brainstorming.
