scattered thinking
Unfocused cognitive wandering
Scattered thinking is a mental state where thoughts lack focus or coherent direction, jumping between topics without following through on any.
The term appears in psychology to describe disorganized cognition, but it's common in everyday speech: I couldn't concentrate—my thinking was too scattered.
Unlike deliberate brainstorming, scattered thinking feels involuntary and unproductive.
