leatherjackets

Tough biker outerwear

Leatherjackets are the larvae of crane flies—grayish-brown grubs with tough, leathery skin that live in soil and feed on grass roots, making them garden pests.

In Australian and New Zealand waters, leatherjackets are also a family of fish with rough, sandpapery skin.

Both uses derive from the same idea of tough outer covering.
