leatherjacket

Soil-dwelling pest grub

A leatherjacket is the larva of a crane fly—a grayish-brown, tough-skinned grub that lives in soil and feeds on plant roots, often damaging lawns and crops.

In Australia and New Zealand, leatherjacket also names several species of fish with tough, leathery skin.

The word sometimes describes a leather jacket worn by motorcyclists, though that usage is less common.
