landgrabber

Illegal property claimer

A landgrabber is someone who seizes land aggressively or opportunistically, often through questionable legal means or by exploiting weaker parties.

The term originated in contexts of colonial expansion and frontier settlement, where speculators or settlers would claim territory belonging to others.

Today it applies broadly to anyone—individual or corporate—who acquires land through predatory practices: International landgrabbers have bought up vast tracts of African farmland.

The related noun landgrab describes the act itself.
