knee breeches

Pants ending mid-leg

Knee breeches are trousers that end just below the knee, typically fastened with a button or buckle at the leg opening.

They were standard men's attire in Europe and America through the 18th century before being largely replaced by full-length trousers.

Today they survive mainly in ceremonial dress, historical costume, and traditional riding attire: The footmen wore knee breeches and powdered wigs.
