kettle stitch
Bookbinding chain link
A kettle stitch is a stitch used in bookbinding to link sections of a book together at the spine.
At the end of each signature, the thread loops through the previous section's thread before continuing, creating a chain-like connection that holds the gathered pages together.
The name may derive from a German word for chain.
The binder tied off with a kettle stitch at the head and tail of the spine.
