fatal error
Unrecoverable system failure
A fatal error is a malfunction severe enough to halt a program or system entirely—the software equivalent of a heart attack.
Unlike errors that can be caught or recovered from, a fatal error forces immediate termination: The application crashed with a fatal error.
The term appears in computing contexts but extends to any catastrophic mistake: Invading Russia in winter proved a fatal error.
