karmic debt
Cosmic moral ledger
Karmic debt is the spiritual burden accumulated from wrongdoing in past lives, requiring repayment through suffering or good deeds in this one.
The concept comes from Hindu and Buddhist traditions but circulates loosely in Western spirituality: She believed her chronic illness was karmic debt from a previous life.
More casually, it describes any accumulated moral obligation: After all the favors he'd done me, I had serious karmic debt to repay.
