jaywalk

Pedestrian traffic violation

To jaywalk is to cross a street illegally—outside a crosswalk, against a signal, or otherwise in violation of pedestrian traffic laws.

The term emerged in early 20th-century America, when "jay" meant a naive rural person unfamiliar with city ways: She jaywalked across the busy intersection without looking.
