jayhawkers

Free State guerrillas

Jayhawkers were antislavery guerrilla fighters in Kansas and Missouri before and during the Civil War, conducting raids against pro-slavery settlers.

The term later became a general nickname for Kansans, particularly University of Kansas athletes.

A jayhawk—the mythical bird mascot—combines a blue jay and a hawk.

The Jayhawkers burned the farm to the ground.
