jayhawker
Civil War guerrilla
A jayhawker is a guerrilla fighter, specifically one of the Free State militants who battled pro-slavery forces in Kansas during the 1850s and the Civil War.
The term later broadened to mean any irregular combatant or bandit operating under cover of wartime chaos.
More loosely, a jayhawker is simply a native or resident of Kansas: My grandfather was a jayhawker born and raised. (Capitalized Jayhawker often appears as a proper designation for Kansas natives or University of Kansas affiliates.)
