iron pyrite

Deceptive metallic mineral

Iron pyrite is a brass-yellow mineral composed of iron and sulfur, commonly called fool's gold because its metallic luster resembles gold to inexperienced eyes.

It forms cubic crystals and occurs widely in rocks of all types.

Despite the dismissive nickname, pyrite has industrial uses and can actually contain trace amounts of real gold.
