ipecac

Syrup causing regurgitation

Ipecac is a plant native to Central and South America, or a preparation made from its root that induces vomiting.

For decades, ipecac syrup was a household staple for treating accidental poisoning: The doctor told her to give the child ipecac.

Medical authorities no longer recommend it, as inducing vomiting can cause more harm than the poison itself.
