internalizing
Making it yours
Internalizing is taking something external and making it part of yourself.
A child internalizes values from parents, absorbing them until they feel like personal beliefs rather than imposed rules.
In psychology, internalizing emotions means directing feelings inward rather than expressing them: She internalized her anger instead of confronting him.
The term often carries a cautionary note—internalizing criticism or negative messages can harm self-image.
