iliac fossa

Hip bone hollow

The iliac fossa is the large, smooth, concave surface on the inner side of the ilium—the broad upper portion of the hip bone.

It provides attachment for the iliacus muscle and forms part of the pelvic cavity's lateral wall.

In medical contexts, the term often refers to the corresponding region of the lower abdomen: pain in the right iliac fossa may suggest appendicitis.
