Southern fried side
A hush puppy is a small ball of cornmeal batter, deep-fried until golden brown.
It's a staple of Southern American cooking, typically served alongside fried fish or barbecue: The catfish came with coleslaw and hush puppies.
The name supposedly comes from tossing scraps to quiet barking dogs. (Capitalized Hush Puppies is a shoe brand.)
