hurricane hunter
Cyclone reconnaissance aircraft
Hurricane hunter refers to aircraft and their crews that fly directly into tropical storms and hurricanes to collect meteorological data.
These missions gather information about wind speed, pressure, and storm structure that satellites cannot provide.
The term applies both to the specially equipped planes—typically military C-130s or P-3 Orions—and to the personnel who fly them: Hurricane hunters reported the storm had intensified to Category 4.
