hotspot volcanism
Mantle plume activity
Hotspot volcanism is volcanic activity caused by a plume of unusually hot material rising from deep within Earth's mantle, independent of tectonic plate boundaries.
As a plate drifts over the stationary hotspot, it creates chains of volcanoes—the Hawaiian Islands formed this way, with each island progressively older as you move northwest from the active hotspot.
