igneous rocks
Solidified molten stone
Igneous rocks are rocks formed when molten material cools and solidifies.
They divide into two main types: intrusive rocks like granite, which cool slowly underground and develop visible crystals, and extrusive rocks like basalt, which cool quickly at the surface and have fine grain.
The Hawaiian islands are built from igneous rocks.
