hoovering

Sucking up dust

Hoovering is vacuuming, from the Hoover brand of vacuum cleaners.

The term is standard in British English: I spent the morning hoovering the carpets.

In psychological contexts, hoovering describes an abuser's attempts to suck a victim back into a relationship after they've left—like a vacuum pulling in debris: He started hoovering her with apologies and promises to change.
