honky-tonks

Rowdy country venues

Honky-tonks are rowdy bars or dance halls, especially in the American South, featuring country music, drinking, and often a rough-edged atmosphere.

The term evokes neon signs, jukeboxes, and sawdust floors: We spent Saturday night at a honky-tonk outside Austin.

Honky-tonk also names a style of country piano with a tinny, percussive sound.
