homozygotes

Same-allele gene carriers

Homozygotes are organisms or cells that carry identical versions of a particular gene on both chromosomes—one from each parent.

The term appears in genetics discussions about inheritance patterns: Homozygotes for the recessive trait will express it, while heterozygotes carry it silently.

A person who is a homozygote for a gene is described as homozygous.
