homophonic

Pronounced the same way

Homophonic describes music in which one melodic line dominates while other voices provide harmonic accompaniment—as opposed to polyphonic music, where multiple independent melodies interweave.

A hymn with a soprano melody over block chords is homophonic.

The term also describes words that sound alike but differ in meaning or spelling: pair and pear are homophonic.
