high hat
Pedal-operated cymbal pair
High hat (also hi-hat) is a pair of cymbals mounted on a stand and operated by a foot pedal, a staple of drum kits since the 1920s.
The pedal clashes the cymbals together or holds them closed for different timbres.
Separately, to high-hat someone is to treat them with condescension or snobbery: Don't high-hat me just because you went to Yale.
A high hat is also a person who acts superior.
