high-test

Superior fuel grade

High-test describes gasoline with a high octane rating, the kind that burns more efficiently and prevents engine knocking in high-performance vehicles.

The term dates from when premium fuel was marketed as superior to regular grades.

By extension, high-test can describe anything potent or powerful: high-test coffee suggests an especially strong brew, and high-test liquor implies something with a kick.
