hexamine

Solid camping fuel

Hexamine is a chemical compound used primarily as a solid fuel for portable stoves and as a urinary antiseptic.

Campers know it as the white tablets that burn with a nearly smokeless flame: The backpacker lit a hexamine tablet under his mess kit.

In medicine, it treats urinary tract infections by releasing formaldehyde in acidic urine.

Also called methenamine.
