hepcats

Cool jazz lovers

Hepcats is a dated slang term for people who are hip—knowledgeable about jazz, swing, or the latest cultural trends.

The word flourished in the 1930s and 40s jazz scene: The hepcats gathered at the club to hear the new bebop.

Now used nostalgically or humorously to evoke that era.

Also spelled hep cats.
