longhairs

Classical music devotees

Longhairs are people with long hair, but the word carries cultural weight beyond hairstyle.

In mid-20th century America, it often meant classical music enthusiasts or intellectuals—the stereotype of the unkempt artist or professor.

During the 1960s and 70s, longhairs were hippies, counterculture types, or anyone whose hair signaled rejection of conventional values: The bar didn't welcome longhairs.

The term could be affectionate or dismissive depending on who used it.
