helpmate
One who assists
A helpmate is a companion who provides assistance and support, especially a spouse.
The word arose from a misreading of the biblical phrase "an help meet for him" (a helper suitable for him), where *meet* meant fitting or appropriate.
Helpmate and the variant *helpmeet* now mean the same thing—a partner who shares life's burdens: She was his helpmate for forty years.
