helotry
Institutionalized forced labor
Helotry is the condition of being a helot—a serf or slave, particularly in ancient Sparta where helots worked the land for their masters.
By extension, helotry describes any system of bondage or serfdom, or the class of people subjected to it: The plantation system created a helotry that persisted in various forms after emancipation.
