hellmouths
Infernal gateway openings
Hellmouths are openings to hell, depicted in medieval art and literature as monstrous gaping jaws through which the damned enter eternal torment.
The image appears in illuminated manuscripts, mystery plays, and church carvings.
In contemporary use, hellmouth describes any place of concentrated evil or supernatural danger—popularized by the television series *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*, where Sunnydale sits atop one: The hellmouth attracts every demon in California.
