heliotropism
Turning toward light
Heliotropism is the tendency of plants to turn toward or away from the sun.
Sunflowers famously track the sun across the sky, their heads rotating from east to west throughout the day.
The phenomenon extends beyond flowers—leaves and stems adjust their orientation to maximize or minimize sun exposure.
The heliotropism of young sunflowers ceases once they mature.
