haywain

Dried grass transport

A haywain is a large wagon used for hauling hay, particularly during harvest.

The word combines hay with wain, an old term for a four-wheeled cart.

While the vehicle itself has largely been replaced by modern farm equipment, haywain remains familiar from John Constable's famous 1821 painting *The Hay Wain*, which depicts a horse-drawn cart crossing a shallow river in the English countryside.
