hawk moth

Swift nocturnal flyer

A hawk moth is a stout-bodied moth with narrow wings and a long proboscis, capable of hovering in place while feeding on flower nectar—hence the alternate name hummingbird moth.

The larvae are hornworms, some of which are agricultural pests: The tomato hornworm becomes a five-spotted hawk moth.
