elephant beetle

Massive tropical insect

Elephant beetles are large tropical beetles, some among the biggest insects in the world.

Males have distinctive horn-like projections on their heads, vaguely resembling an elephant's trunk.

Found primarily in Central and South American rainforests, they can reach lengths of five inches.

Despite their imposing size, they're harmless to humans and feed mainly on tree sap and rotting fruit.
