hawfinch

Stocky European finch

A hawfinch is a stocky European finch with a massive, powerful beak capable of cracking cherry pits and other hard seeds that smaller birds cannot manage.

It is the largest finch native to Britain, though notoriously shy and difficult to spot despite its distinctive thick-necked silhouette.

The name combines "haw" (the fruit of hawthorn, part of its diet) with "finch."
