handheld camera
Grip-operated filming device
A handheld camera is one operated without a tripod or other stabilizing mount, held and moved by the camera operator.
The technique produces footage with visible movement and shake, lending a sense of immediacy or documentary realism: The chase scene was shot with a handheld camera.
The style became associated with cinéma vérité and later with found-footage horror films.
