hand-raising

Classroom participation gesture

Hand-raising is the practice of raising livestock—especially calves, lambs, or foals—by human care rather than letting the mother nurse them: The orphaned calf required hand-raising.

The term also applies to raising one's hand to get attention or signal participation, though this sense usually appears as the two-word phrase raising a hand.
