hallow

Render ritually pure

Hallow means to make holy or to honor as sacred.

The word is archaic and literary, surviving mainly in Halloween (All Hallows' Eve, the night before All Saints' Day) and in the Lord's Prayer: hallowed be thy name.

The noun hallow, meaning a saint or holy person, is even rarer.

To hallow ground is to consecrate it: We cannot hallow this ground more than those who fought here.
