growlers

Refillable brewery containers

Growlers are portable containers, typically glass jugs holding 32 or 64 ounces, used to transport draft beer from a brewery or bar.

I picked up a growler of their new IPA.

The term also refers to small icebergs or ice chunks—hazards to ships because they float low in the water and are hard to spot.

In older slang, a growler was a pail used to fetch beer from a tavern, and to rush the growler meant to go buy beer.

Informally, anything that growls—a surly person, a threatening dog, thunder—may be called a growler.
