greenbrier
Prickly climbing plant
Greenbrier is a thorny vine of the genus *Smilax*, common in eastern North America.
The plants have tough, woody stems covered in sharp prickles and can form dense, impenetrable thickets.
The name comes from the green stems and briar-like thorns: We had to hack through greenbrier to reach the creek.
