greenbriers
Thorny climbing plants
Greenbriers are thorny climbing vines of the genus Smilax, native to eastern North America.
They have tough, woody stems covered in sharp prickles and heart-shaped leaves, forming dense tangles in forests and thickets.
The vines are notoriously difficult to clear: We spent hours hacking through greenbriers along the trail.
